What Happens During a Driving Test? A Step-by-Step Guide
The driving test is the final hurdle — and while it might feel daunting, knowing exactly what to expect can really help calm your nerves. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what happens on the big day.
1. Arrival and ID Check
Arrive at the test centre 10 minutes early. Bring your provisional licence and your theory test pass certificate (if needed). Your examiner will check your documents and explain the structure of the test.
2. The Eyesight Check
You’ll be asked to read a number plate from 20 metres away. Make sure your glasses or contacts are in if you need them — this part must be passed to continue.
3. Show Me, Tell Me Questions
These safety questions are designed to check your knowledge of basic car maintenance and controls. One ‘tell me’ question before driving, and one ‘show me’ while you’re on the move.
4. The Driving Section
You’ll drive for around 40 minutes, following both directions from the examiner and a sat nav. You’ll be asked to complete one manoeuvre and may be asked to perform an emergency stop. Don’t panic — we’ll have covered all of this in lessons!
5. Independent Driving
For 20 minutes, you’ll follow a sat nav or road signs without step-by-step directions. It’s not a memory test — it’s about safe, independent decision-making.
6. The Result
At the end, your examiner will go through any faults and tell you whether you’ve passed. You’re allowed up to 15 minor faults, but no serious or dangerous ones.
Bonus Stat
According to the DVSA, the national average pass rate is around 48%. With the right prep and mindset, you can beat the odds!
